BYK Gloss Meters - Everything You Need to Know

If you are a professional working in the paints and coatings industry, you want to ensure that the work is done using a quality paint finish. But how do you know if the paint has been applied correctly and with enough strength to prevent peeling, cracking, and fading?

To help answer this question and others like it regularly faced by professionals, BYK gloss meters are developed. These meters offer an easy way for people to test and assess paint products for their quality as well as provide real-time feedback on aspects such as gloss level and coverage.

Byk gloss meter are devices that consist of a small box like design, a display around it, and the measuring mechanism. The display has a digital read-out of the gloss value and gives an indication of how thick or thin the paint is and if it has been applied correctly. There are several different types of gloss meters for different surfaces on which paint can be applied.

The various devices measure gloss differently using either a reflected light source or an incident light source. A reflected light source depends on an area to reflect light at an angle into the instrument from where it measures the angle at which it is reflected back. The measurement of this angle indicates the gloss value, and whether it is above or below a certain number on the scale. This number varies for each gloss meter that is made. An incident light source is one in which light measures the reflection from an object.

The Reflected Light Source Gloss Meters

The most common types of gloss meters are the reflected light source types. They use either a white diffused LED light system or a halogen lamp as their light source and send it to a prism that bends the light through 90 degrees, which measures its reflection off the sample surface and sends it back to be measured by an optical sensor that determines how much has been reflected back.

The gloss levels on these meters are given from a number scale divided into five sections, which are:

The Incident Light Source Gloss Meters

These types of gloss meters use a halogen lamp or an LED light as their light source. There is no prism, and the light bounces off the surface directly into the sensor. When there is very little light reflected back to the sensor, this indicates that there is not enough gloss. When all of the measurement surface for a particular meter has been measured, it will tell you how much light was reflected back to the sensor and divide it by how much was projected onto the surface in order to determine a ratio. This ratio is then used to establish a gloss level.

The Gloss Meter Probe

The probe for the incident light source meters is small and usually just screws into place like a camera lens, while the reflected light source types have larger cases in which you place the probe tip, which is usually a metal ball. There are many different types of tips to choose from when purchasing a gloss meter, based on what you will be using it for. For instance, if you will be mainly measuring the surface of paint or varnish coatings and not any non-metallic surfaces, then you will want to purchase one with tips for measuring glossy surfaces.

There are many websites that sell gloss meters online, however, if you are planning to buy Byk gloss meters, look no other than TestCoat. The online industrial equipment store has everything you need for professional and DIY jobs at hand.
