If we assume that all measurements are made with simultaneous incidence, it is possible to calculate an average value which will give us an average gloss reading. For other measurements, the same diffusing plate is used, but with a minor modification. A white reference target (pattern) is put in front of the diffusing plate. The intensity distribution on this reference target indicates how transparent or translucent the surface is.
